An interview with Jacob Nderitu Mbayu- Working with S.S Mehta and Sons Ltd, and a Former Plant Operator student from Sensei Institute of Technology.
Jacob didn’t grow up in a well-off family, his parents worked hard to provide for him and educate him. However he never lost hope in life, he chose not to have a mindset of failure because he believed that one day he would make his dream of becoming a plant operator come true. He hustled his way through life after school by starting boda boda services, with this business; he saved up for the Plant operator course which he enrolled for in April 2015.
Nderitu specialized in the Excavator, Motor Grader, and Bulldozer, after completing the training he was placed as an attaché at Ages Construction Company, where he was exposed to further experience in the fields of road construction, Bush clearing, Bench Formation, Back slope cut, Vertical cut and Drainage Cut layer. “This attachment opportunity gave me the exposure and experience to be competent at my work”. Nderitu said.
After attachment, Nderitu was privileged to get an opportunity at China Overseas and Engineering Company (COVEC), where he worked on the Kisumu – Kakamega Road construction project as an Excavator Operator in the year 2015. Furthermore, he moved on to China Jiaxing for the Kitale – Webuye Road project in January 2016. Upon completion of the projects, Nderitu was hired at S.S Mehta & Sons Ltd where he has worked on various projects such as the Murang’a Nyoka Nyoka road project, Kirieini – Mugeka Road Project, Maumau – Ndakaini Road project, Kairo – Kariki Road Project, and Currently the Gilgil – Machinery Road Project.
“What’s your secret?” We asked Nderitu.
I am competent, I work with minimal supervision, I take my work seriously and I don’t have to be reminded of what I’m supposed to do.
His advice,
“Don’t be afraid to chase your dreams, work at it with all you have, disappointment is part of life, don’t let that limit you. I have been introduced to a whole new world of opportunities, I want to replicate what Sensei has done for me by working hard with all my heart and inspiring others to aim for the Sky.
